The six-string cello is one of the most demanding instruments we make. Its range runs from a low F in the double bass register to a high E in the viola register, a frequency span that pushes traditional materials to their limits.

Construction

A six-string is not a cello with two extra pegs. Statics, geometry and string height all have to be redesigned to control the extreme string tension across the entire frequency range. Only a handful of makers worldwide take this on.

Carbon fiber gives a decisive advantage here: the body provides the structural rigidity for the high string tension and at the same time the resonance that lets every single string speak clearly and immediately. No wolf tones, across the whole range.

Playability

Whether six strings stay musically playable is decided by the setup. The instrument is delivered with a widened neck and a purpose-made fingerboard. String spacing and bridge curvature are calibrated so that every string can be bowed cleanly without touching its neighbors.

The pickup

Cordasonus is built into the instrument. Nothing to retrofit, nothing glued on, no hardware sitting on the body. The system is piezoelectric, but it uses a proprietary treated crystal from a German ceramics technology company. The sensor sits in the bridge and registers pressure changes there and nothing else, not the general resonance of the body. The result is a natural tone without the hardness of conventional piezo systems, a frequency response from 10 Hz to 80 kHz and low feedback sensitivity.

Connects through a 6.3 mm jack, no battery. The pickup rotates in the bridge: turning it in 45 degree steps changes the tonal character, with no tools and no equalizer.
