The DesignLine Hybrid Double Bass combines everything the mezzo-forte bass stands for – detachable neck, carbon fiber sound, hand-finished surface – with a permanently integrated pickup system. Acoustic in the orchestra, amplified in the jazz club, disassembled in the boot of your car. Developed in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University.

Detachable Neck

An engineered plug-in connection allows quick removal of the neck – no tools, no play, no loss of vibration transfer. When assembled, the neck sits rock-solid. When detached, the instrument reduces to 120 cm in overall length. No specialist transport, no freight service – the bass fits in the boot of your car.

Sound

Acoustically, the Hybrid bass delivers the same warm, carrying tone as the purely acoustic model – a deep foundation with pronounced overtone richness that convinces arco and pizzicato players alike.

• Arco: Carries in the orchestra with a full, singing tone. Clean response even in the lowest positions.
• Pizzicato: Defined attack with natural sustain – cuts through in a jazz ensemble.
• Response: Extremely easy to play. The instrument reacts directly, without the resistance many wooden basses show in the lower registers.

Pickup System

A permanently installed ANS pickup system (AbsoluteNaturalSound) based on dynamic microphone technology. The pickup is built into the instrument from the start – no retrofitting, no adhesive mounts, no cable clutter.

• Connection: Standard 1/4" (6.3 mm) jack – directly compatible with amplifiers, mixing consoles, and effects units.
• Principle: Plug & play. Connect a cable, start playing. No battery required, no pre-wiring needed.
• Tonal Character: The ANS pickup captures the instrument's natural voice – warm, detailed, and free from the harshness typically associated with piezo-based systems.

Surface

Available exclusively in DesignLine finish: manufactured using a vacuum infusion process, then hand-lacquered, sanded, and polished to a high gloss. The shimmering carbon weave with its three-dimensional depth gives the instrument a stage presence that stands out.

Components

Every DesignLine Hybrid Double Bass is built, set up, and shipped ready to play from our German workshop:

• Tuning Machines: Rubner individual machines – precise and reliable.
• Fingerboard: Solid ebony – deliberately chosen as the traditional material for a familiar playing feel.
• Strings: D'Addario Helicore, strung to match your playing style: Orchestra, Pizzicato, or Hybrid.
• Pickup: ANS (AbsoluteNaturalSound), dynamic microphone technology, 1/4" (6.3 mm) jack.
• Scale Length: Standard 105 cm (3/4 size).

Configuration

• 5-String: Available on request as a 5-string model with extended range.
